Story

Jamie-Lea was born in Coonamble NSW, completing her HSC at Coonamble High School. She undertook her Bachelor of Art Education College of Fine Arts UNSW, with a major in Sculpture and a minor in Photography, immersing herself in Art Education, Aboriginal history and the research roles of arts workers.

In 2009 Jamie-Lea returned to her hometown to take on the role of Executive Director for Outback Arts, a not for profit arts organisation in far North West NSW. Outback Arts develops and promotes arts and culture in the far west through a broad range of community arts development programs and special initiatives that supports communities that are limited or disadvantaged in terms of access to arts and culture.

A Wiradyuri/ Ngunnawal artist living on Wayilwan/ Gamilaroi Country Jamie-Lea has an artist’s practice spanning 20 years. her work has been exhibited as part of;

String theory: Focus on contemporary Australian art 2013 which brought together over 30 Aboriginal artists and artist groups from across the country at the Museum of Contemporary Art Sydney

Country: Connective understanding: a focus through contemporary Aboriginal art a Collateral event at 56th Venice Biennale 2015.

Her passion and advocacy for community arts practice has played an integral role in her own artistic achievements. Her multi-disciplinary practice connects the narrative between her contemporary arts practice to the stories of her upbringing, exploring native wildlife and her families connections as stockmen, drovers, cooks and adventurers.

She explores the ancient traditions of carving and string making through a contemporary approach to fibre art, printmaking, painting and ceramic installation.

Jamie’s work often reflects the soft and tactile experiences of nature, pulling together pieces of beauty from the natural environment and magnifying their detail. Her works signifying both the nature of how materials are collected in the natural world by ancestors and animals, mimicking the natural instincts of nesting, crafting homes filled with precious items and being surrounded by bold, brave and authentic families.
